FRENCH-LANGUAGE GROUP BOYCOTTS COFFEE SHOPS

French-language activists are staging a boycott of Second Cup coffee shops because, they say, the franchise's Quebec outlets should carry a French name.

``It's troubling that a company like Second Cup has never translated its name to suit the Quebec market,'' said Jean-Paul Perreault, president of Imperatif français, the group organizing the boycott.

Imperatif français said it might target other chains with English-only trademark names, including Future Shop, Home Depot and Music World, Montreal Le Devoir reported Saturday.

A provincial advisory body decided two weeks ago that chains with trademark names don't have to adopt French names to comply with Quebec's language laws.
